One such story is that of Shui Luo, who experienced severe abdominal pain that led him to the Emergency Department at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). Shui's condition was critical, with a badly infected pancreas caused by gallstones. Thanks to the expertise of a gastroenterologist at OTMH and the availability of advanced medical equipment, Shui underwent multiple procedures to remove the infection. After several attempts, the team successfully cleared the infection, saving Shui's life. “I’m grateful OTMH had the device needed to bring me back from a desperate situation,” says Shui. “The hospital saved my life.”
This positive outcome is a testament to OTMH's commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care. The support from our community ensures that thousands of patients like Shui have access to advanced equipment, such as Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) devices. These handheld devices allow for real-time scanning at the bedside, enabling quicker assessments and better-informed treatment decisions.
Dr. Laurence Chau, Respirologist and Chief of Medicine at OTMH, highlights the importance of continually updating medical technology to meet the growing and evolving needs of the community. He emphasizes the necessity of equipment like the Arctic Sun Temperature Management Systems and the PrisMax Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy Machine, which are crucial for providing the best possible care to critically ill patients.
